Melissa Etheridge didn’t only release her very own Christmas album “A New Thought for Christmas” a few years ago, but she also went on tour AND released a Live Concert Holiday Special/DVD of one her concerts. That’s what I call a busy holiday season!

„Schön hier mit euch in der Sauna.“

Irgendwann reichten schließlich auch Melissa Etheridges Jackenärmel nicht mehr und es musste ein Handtuch her, damit sich die Musikerin den Schweiß abtrocknen konnte. Sie nahm es mit Humor. „Ich freue mich, hier zu sein – während der einen Woche Sommer, die ihr habt“, scherzte sie.

Auch den über 1.000 Fans im ausverkauften Astra-Kulturhaus in Berlin war die Hitze egal. Begeistert gingen sie bei jedem Song mit, klatschten, sangen, johlten und tanzten zu aktuellen Stücken von Melissas neuem Album „Fearless Love“ ebenso wie zu Klassikern wie „Similar Features“, „Brave & Crazy“ und dem sehnsuchtsvollen „I Want to Come Over“ – klatschnass, aber glücklich, denn endlich hatten sie „ihre“ Melissa wieder.

Im Sommer 2004 hatte die Rockerin aus Kansas im Rahmen ihrer „Lucky Live“-Tournee zuletzt Konzerte in Deutschland gegeben, eine viel zu lange Pause, wie sie auch selbst bekundete. „I missed you, I missed you so much,“ rief sie immer wieder und versprach, dass diesem Auftritt in Berlin bald weitere folgen würden. Die Konzerte in London, Amsterdam und Berlin seien nur eine „Hello Again“-Tour, mit der sie sich bei ihren europäischen Fans zurückmelden wolle.

Und das tat sie eindrucksvoll und rockte mit ihrer vierköpfigen Band fast zweieinhalb Stunden lang, was das Zeug hielt. Dass die lange Pause nicht ganz freiwillig gewesen und in dieser Zeit in ihrem Leben viel passiert sei, ließ sie dabei nicht unerwähnt. So sprach sie über ihre Krebserkrankung – im Herbst 2004 wurde bei ihr Brustkrebs diagnostiziert, sie wurde operiert und musste sich mehrerer Chemotherapien unterziehen – und darüber, wie die Krankheit sie geprägt habe. Insbesondere habe sie gelernt, dass nur sie selbst für ihr eigenes Glück verantwortlich sei. Dazu passend spielte sie die Lieder „Drag Me Away“ und „Heaven on Earth“, beide ebenfalls von ihrer aktuellen CD „Fearless Love“.

Die Erkenntnis, dass die Frau noch vor wenigen Jahren schwer krank war, machte ihre Energieleistung an diesem Abend umso beeindruckender. Die 49-jährige wirkte nicht nur ebenso fit, sondern fast noch fitter als kurz vor ihrer Krankheit, und hatte auf der Bühne ganz offensichtlich Spaß. Wie gewohnt flirtete, scherzte, interagierte sie mit dem Publikum, das sie ein ums andere Mal mit seiner Begeisterung zu überraschen schien, und riss auch ihre Musiker mit. Zwischendurch erbarmte sie sich der schwitzenden Menge und leerte einige Wasserflaschen über ihnen aus – “Bring Me Some Water” einmal anders.

Den Abschluss des Konzerts bildeten dann schließlich eben jener Song und – wie fast bei jedem Konzert – “Like The Way I Do”. Die Zugabe nutzte sie – ebenfalls wie meistens -, um ihren Fans noch eine Botschaft mitzugeben: Dass sie alles erreichen könnten, was sie wollen – “We are the ones, the ones that we’re waiting for.”

Die meisten werden an diesem Abend allerdings etwas anderes gedacht: Dass Melissa diejenige ist, auf die wir alle gewartet haben.

Melissa und Ellen – dieses Bild lässt das Herz jeder Lesbe höher schlagen. Oder vielleicht auch nicht?

Lesben haben kurze Haare, benehmen sich wie Kerle (weil sie eigentlich gern welche wären) und hören den ganzen Tag Melissa Etheridge, wenn sie nicht gerade auf dem Fußballplatz stehen. Habe ich etwas vergessen? Ach ja, sie hassen Männer im Allgemeinen und Schwule im Besonderen, weil die nämlich immer nur “Party machen” wollen.

So oder so ähnlich haben wir sie doch alle schon einmal gehört, die Lesben-Klischees, und inzwischen ist es mir zur Gewohnheit geworden, solcherlei Aussagen reflexartig ganz, ganz, ganz weit und dann noch weiter von mir zu weisen. Aber wie heißt es so schön: Wo Rauch ist, ist meistens auch Feuer, und wenn ich mal ganz ehrlich bin – so daneben liegen diese Klischees doch (in einigen Fällen: leider!) nicht.

Diese Erkenntnis traf mich bei der Lektüre des diesjährigen Hamburg Pride Magazins. In der Kolumne “Typisch schwul! Typisch lesbisch!” haben die Macher des Magazins die fünf gängigsten Aussagen zusammengetragen, die Lesben über Schwule und Schwule über Lesben treffen. Und obwohl die natürlich (hoffentlich?!) nicht ganz ernst gemeint sind, fühlte ich mich doch bei der ein oder anderen ein bißchen ertappt.

Also, bin ich etwa doch eine Klischee-Lesbe? Mal schauen:

Nicht gerade auf Dauerschleife, denn dazwischen muss ich ja auch noch “Starla”, “Keriette” und “Calzona” unterbringen, aber das macht es wohl eher nicht besser. Und angesichts der Tatsache, dass ich mehrere tausend Kilometer weit geflogen bin, nur um mir die Dame mal “live” anzusehen, sowie dass ich jahrelang eine deutsche Ellen-Fan-Webseite betrieben habe, muss ich mir hier wohl sogar die doppelte Zahl an Klischee-Punkten anrechnen lassen.

Ein paar mehr Interpreten sind es dann schon, und Gossip ist dabei tatsächlich noch etwas spärlich vertreten, was damit zu tun haben könnte, dass ich manchmal etwas langsam bin, was die neuesten Trends angeht. Aber Melissa stimmt, und zwar so was von! Nächste Woche ist sie endlich mal wieder zu einem Konzert in Deutschland, und einmal dürft ihr raten, wer in Berlin dabei sein wird.

Puh, hier kann ich durchatmen, denn nach den mit dieser Aussage angesprochenen Armyhosen, Armyshirts, Armykappen und Feinripp-Unterhemden kann man in meinem Kleiderschrank lange suchen. Obwohl – die Hose, die ich gerade anhabe, ist außerordentlich bequem und praktisch, man könnte sie auch bei einem Outdoor-Einsatz ganz gut tragen, und außerdem hat sie 7 (!) Taschen. Auweia…

“Pöbeln, schubsen, Junge spielen [...]“

… und dann trotzdem vehement die eigene Weiblichkeit verteidigen, wenn man mit einem verwechselt wird. Ist nicht mein Fall, war nie mein Fall, wird nie mein Fall sein. Ich habe zwar kurze Haare, aber südlich des Kinns bin ich so eindeutig weiblich, dass ich da unschwer als Junge durchgehen würde, selbst wenn ich es wollte. Trotzdem bin sogar ich schon einige Male mit “Herr” angesprochen worden, was allerdings meinem Gegenüber letztlich immer deutlich unangenehmer war als mir.

Vielleicht bin ich für Scooter und “Hyper, hyper” einfach schon zu alt, aber auch das ist so gar nicht meins. Meine Haare sind zwar kurz, aber immerhin noch lang genug, dass ich Verwendung für eine Bürste habe, und blond bin ich von Natur aus.

Auch wenn es im Ergebnis also nicht zur Klischee-Lesbe reicht, so ganz weit kann ich einige der hier genannten Klischees wohl doch nicht von mir schieben. Aber was soll’s, ich nehm’s sportlich. (Auch wenn das ein weiteres Lesben-Klischee ist, das nicht auf mich zutrifft.)

Not that the two musicians would have needed that kind of help. Their success, and the success of the movie “Once” for which they wrote not only the award-winning “Falling Slowly”, but all of the songs besides also playing the leading roles, are well-deserved. Shot with a small budget of only € 130.000, the movie focuses on the two main characters, how they connect through their mutual love for music and thereby get to know, like and eventually love each other.

Even if they never act out their feelings, by the end of the movie, both of their lives have changed significantly, and – most likely – for the better. It’s a movie about how meeting the right person can make you look at your life and its options differently and eventually make you start to act. And it’s a movie about taking chances.

Because, like the movie poster says: “How often do you find the right person?”

There was a time when people blamed “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and its host for not being gay enough. Well, those times are definitely over.

Only a week after her wife Portia was on, Ellen welcomed Melissa Etheridge as a guest on her show this Wednesday. Two lesbian icons who talk about – gasp! – children, that’s got to be as lesbian as it can get.

Den Oscar für die beste Regie überreichte Barbra Streisand…

… die selbst genau weiß wie es ist, einen Oscar überreicht zu bekommen.

Dass ausgerechnet Barbra Streisand den Oscar für die beste Regie an Kathryn Bigelow überreichen durfte, erschien vielen insbesondere deshalb passen, weil sie selbst nach Meinung vieler Film-Experten um einen Regie-Oscar bzw. zumindest eine Nominierung betrogen wurde. Denn dass sie für ihre Filme “Yentl” (1983) und “Herr der Gezeiten” (1991) in der Regie-Kategorie nicht einmal nominiert wurde, gilt heute als einer der größten Affronts in der Geschichte der Oscars. Allzu sehr muss sie sich allerdings nicht grämen, denn immerhin hat sie schon zwei von den Goldjungs zuhause: 1969 gewann sie den Oscar als beste Hauptdarstellerin für den Film “Funny Girl”, 1977 für den besten Filmsong (“Evergreen” aus “A Star Is Born”).

So oft wie sie wurde noch keine Schauspielerin für den Oscar nominiert: Meryl Streep (hier 1983)

Auch wenn Meryl Streep in diesem Jahr erneut leer ausging, zweimal durfte sie sich schon freuen: 1980 gewann sie in der Kategorie “Beste Nebendarstellerin” für “Kramer gegen Kramer”, 1983 wurde sie – hochschwanger – als beste Hauptdarstellerin für “Sophies Entscheidung” ausgezeichnet (siehe oben).

Auch Jodie Foster ist zwar Regisseurin, ihre beiden Oscars hat sie jedoch als Schauspielerin gewonnen: 1989 für “Angeklagt”, 1992 für “Das Schweigen der Lämmer”, jeweils in der Kategorie “Beste Hauptdarstellerin”. Zum ersten Mal für einen Oscar nominiert war sie übrigens 1977 für den Film “Taxi Driver”, und zwar im zarten Alter von 14 Jahren.

Nennt ebenfalls einen Oscar ihr Eigen: Marlee Matlin

Vielen gerade jüngeren Fans von “The L Word” dürfte gar nicht bekannt sein, dass auch “Jodi” Marlee Matlin eine Oscar-Preisträgerin ist. Sie gewann 1987 mit nur 21 Jahren den Oscar als beste Hauptdarstellerin für den Film “Gottes vergessene Kinder”. Anders als die Damen auf dem vorhergehenden und auch auf dem nachfolgenden Bild liebt die vierfache Mutter allerdings (leider) nur vor der Kamera Frauen…

Flirt mit Oscar: Melissa Etheridge

Für Melissa Etheridge ist der Oscar “der einzige nackte Mann, der jemals in mein Schlafzimmer kommt”. Auch Gattin Tammy dürfte die Anwesenheit des Goldjungen, den Melissa 2007 in der Kategorie “Bester Filmsong” für “I Need To Wake Up”, das Titellied von Al Gores Film “An Inconvenient Truth”, gewann, kaum stören.

Und last but not least: Sie hat zwar keinen Oscar gewonnen, aber für die Moderation der Oscarverleihung im Jahr 2007 hätte sie ihn mindestens verdient gehabt:

As if being married to a hot and smart blonde, who happened to top AfterEllen’s Hot 100 list last year, having a enourmously succesful talk show and being the new judge on American Idol was not enough, Ellen also has a “royal” fan.

Also in the March issue of the Advocate, Academy Award winner and former “Queen” Helen Mirren gushes over Ellen. Asked who she would pick to play her love interest if she ever played a lesbian role again, she answered:

” I would just want a wonderful actress, gay or straight, but I certainly wouldn’t say no to Ellen DeGeneres. I’m such a huge fan of hers and I’ve loved her from a distance for such a long time, so it was quite a moment for me this year to do her show, stand on her set, and see her right there in front of me.”

Valentine’s Day is coming up, time to “Share The Love”. At least that is what the fashion label Armani Exchange thought and started an ad campaign that features three couples: a straight couple, a lesbian couple and a gay couple.

Way too much love for a conservative group called OneMillionMoms, who called the ad “soft porn” and wants the ads to be removed from Armani stores. I don’t know about you, but I think that there is a fair chance that the posters will in fact be removed – on Monday.

Actresses Jill Bennett and Cathy DeBuono (“Out at the Wedding”) announced this week that they intend to travel to London for the screening of their movie “And Then Came Lola” (a lesbian version of the German hit “Lola rennt”) at the London Gay & Lesbian Film Festival in March. They would love to travel to two more European cities, and they ask their fans for help.

Long before her very own Christmas CD “A New Thought For Christmas” was released last year, Melissa Etheridge provided us with this great version of a John Lennon Christmas song:

It all started on Monday, when I read on AE that Brooke Smith was fired from Grey’s Anatomy. At first, I thought that it was a joke, but unfortunately it wasn’t. I love Grey’s Anatomy, I think it’s one of the best shows on TV at the moment, the writing is superb, and there are some amazing actors on that show, one of them being Brooke Smith. I had just began to like her character, and not just because last week, she suddenly saw leaves (careful, spoilers!), but because she was interesting and complex and at times made it actually very hard to like her. Not to mention, of course, that she was involved with another woman. So thank you, GA producers, for firing someone who made your show worth watching.

And then Proposition 8 passed in California, which practically means a ban on gay marriage. And gay marriage wasn’t only banned in California, but in Florida and Arizona as well.

Of course, you might wonder why I feel so strongly about this, even if I’m not affected by it. Well, first of all, this ban affects people I know and care for and who, at the moment, don’t even know what their legal status is, whether they are still married or whether the ban means that their marriage is now void. And secondly, I actually am affected by it, because their rights are being stripped from those people because they are gay, and in the days of globalization, if there’s discrimination against gays somewhere in the world, all of us are affected by it.

But it wasn’t even the passing of Prop. 8 itself which angered me so much. It was the realization that nobody can take away the right to get married from me because – other than the people in California – I never even had that right in the first place. Of course, I could get married, but only to someone from the opposite sex. Even though our constitution includes the principle of equality, it’s not applicable for sexual orientation. Which is somehow understandable, because it was written in 1949, a time in which homosexuality was still considered an illness. But that was almost 60 years ago, and times have changed, and a constitution can be amended if there was a will to do it. And that’s exactly the problem.

7 years ago, in 2001, Germany implemented the so-called “Registered Partnership”. The partnership granted certain rights to the couples, like visitation rights and the right of residence. But it also brought along a lot of commitments, and whereas straight, married couples get tax incentives for taking on the same commitments, gay couples don’t. As a result, a lot of couples refrained from registering, prompting opponents of gay marriage to argue that the gay community obviously isn’t interested in getting married in the first place. Another thing the partnership doesn’t include is the right to adopt a child. I remember seeing a politician that I liked and that I had voted for justifying this with the well-being of the child. I do believe that it’s not easy for a child to have gay parents, but isn’t that still better than having NO parents? Obviously not, according to the representatives that I voted for and that are being paid from my taxes.

When I thought about all these things this week, for the first time in my life I understood what people mean when they say that they feel like second-class citizens, and I got angry. I know that I’m still better off than a lot of people who are still being discriminated against daily, who have to fear for their jobs or even their well-being if they come out. But that was my head telling me that. In my heart, I was still angry.

But fortunately, there was a ray of light on the horizon, something that made me feel better again. And that was my colleagues’ reaction. I had told them about Proposition 8, and all day on Wednesday, when it was still too close to call whether it had passed or not, people came up to me and asked what the current status was. They willingly listened to me ranting, and expressed their regrets and even tried to comfort me after it was clear that it had passed. I think that before they knew me, most of them never even thought about gay rights, but now it’s something they keep an eye on and care about.

With straight allies like them, equality is getting closer.
