When German TV channel Sat.1 announced that they cancelled their telenovela "Hand aufs Herz", the fans decided that they wouldn't just take that lying down. They started to fight - with emails, letters, oregano, videos, and flashmobs - even a virtual one.

A few months ago, I told you about “Hand aufs Herz”, a German soap opera / telenovela that has quickly become one of my favourite TV shows, and not just because of a wonderful couple named Jemma or because I got to visit the set and meet some of the people involved in the making of the show. Unlike other soap operas or telenovelas, the storylines seem much more realistic, the acting and the writing is good, even excellent at times, and on top of that, there’s music!

After a performance of the school’s “glee club” STAG,
Emma and Jenny come out to their classmates – and the entire school

So you can imagine my disappointment when German TV channel Sat.1 announced that they cancelled the show after only season. But if you think that “HaHe” fans would just accept the media company’s decision, you’re wrong. Instead of whining and mourning, a lot of fans decided to fight. They wrote emails and letters, sent packages with oregano (loooong story), put together videos and much more. They even organized flashmobs, and not just in real life, but virtual!

Initiated by the ladies over at the Jemma fan website Jemma International and with contributions from all over the world, this virtual flashmob is witty and beautiful and moving and very impressive and thus does this wonderful show and the witty, beautiful and moving Jemma storyline credit.

So here it is. Enjoy!

Unfortunately, Sat.1 doesn’t seem impressed by all of the love and devotion the fans showed for their favourite show, and it looks like the episode scheduled for September 5th will actually be the last one.

A TV show about a school choir? Sounds a lot like “Glee”. But German TV show “Hand aufs Herz” is very different from Glee, and they proved it again this week when the students performed a song that would probably give Mr. Schue (or the US TV censor, for that matter) a heart attack.

When the German daily soap opera “Hand aufs Herz” (HaHe) first started last October, people used to compare it to “Glee” because it also includes a school choir. But STAG, which is the name of the choir on HaHe, and the show itself couldn’t be more different. On HaHe, there is less singing, and the singing seems less professional than on “Glee”, which doesn’t mean that it’s not good – it’s just different.

This week, the members of STAG and their classmates went on strike and occupied the school to protest against reforms their headmaster has introduced that discriminate against less clever and less rich students. So on this Friday’s episode, in order to get their point across, STAG devoted a very special song to said headmaster.

And if you’re still looking for things that distinguish HaHe from Glee, here’s another one: THIS song would never be shown on US network TV.

(Click on the photo to get to the video.)

A few weeks ago, it was Super Bowl Sunday in the U.S.

Apart from – you know – the actual match, what people usually talk about the next day are the commercials shown during the broadcast of the event. This year, one of the most talked about commercials was probably this one for (and I write this with some sense of nationality) a German automaker. Enjoy!

Today is the first Advent Sunday, which means the holiday season is well underway. Time to put together a Christmas playlist for your iPod, iPhone, iPad or the MP3 Player of your choice.

One song that has been on all of my holiday playlists ever since it was released is “Wonderful Dream” by Melanie Thornton:

I wish you all a wonderful holiday season, that you get to enjoy it with friends and family and that it’s not going to be too stressful and hectic for you.

Of course, just like last year, I put together an Advent calendar this year as well. So make sure to come back on Wednesday, Dec. 1, when we open the first window of mel’s blog Advent calendar 2010.

If there was ever a doubt that “Glee” is one of the best and most entertaining shows on television at the moment (and yes, I’m talking about me after I watched the – what I thought – comparatively lame premiere of season 2), this week’s episode alone could dissipate that doubt once and for all when the cast and crew took on THE cult musical of all times: The Rocky Horror Picture Show. What a treat!

If you like Rocky Horror and have a chance to watch the show, you should. Here’s a sneak peek on what you would miss if you don’t:

Haven’t you always had the feeling that Rachel Maddow was hiding something from us? Like, for example, the reason why she is so awesome that even straight, married women are falling for her? Well, thank God for American right-wingers like Billy Bob Neck or we still would have no clue.

On Friday, Rachel showed a video made by Neck on her show and admits that this “pathetic human mortal” actually revealed her dark secret. (And even if this will make you cringe, make sure you watch it to the end. Trust me, it’s worth it!)

There you have it. Rachel “Mad Cow” Maddow is actually “Rachel, Queen of the Undead” and she “shall feast on your blood” (quote Rachel).

If you’re now thinking that this guy can’t be for real – well, luckily, no he isn’t. Billy Bob Neck is a character created by comedian Paul Day as a satire on the Christian Conservative Movement. Still, with all the craziness that’s going on in American right-wing politics at the moment, it’s unfortunately not that unlikely that someone like Billy Bob actually exists out there, somewhere. Scary, isn’t it?

“Queen Rachel” meanwhile apparently has so much fun with her “lesbian vampire” image that she is not ready to let it go just yet. Yesterday, she posted this picture on her blog:

To quote a comment on the blog: “That just took awesomeness to a whole new level.”

Vampire or not, we love you, Rachel!

This German short movie about a bike courier by day / graffiti sprayer by night was released last week, and ladies, it looks a lot like you’re going to love it!

A sexy cocktail, a love letter to a city, feminist art to all – that’s “Lady Pochoir”.

The German short movie, which had its premiere last week in Cologne, tells the story of Yv (Nadine Rennack), a bike courier in Cologne. By night, she becomes Lady Pochoir (“Stencil”) and wields stencils and spray paint to decorate the dreary walls of her city. When her tags catch the eye of an art publisher, the straight-laced careerist Lexy (Verena Zimmermann), sparks start to fly. Yv’s life is about to become as big an adventure as her nighttime forays – if only she can stay one step ahead of Sascha (Vanessa Jung), the annoying policewoman who’s taken more interest in her than is strictly needed…

Here’s the trailer:

Want to see more? (Trust me, you DO want to see more!)

Here you go:

Sexy, isn’t it? I for one can’t wait to see the entire movie. Luckily, audiences both in Germany and the U.S. will get that chance soon, as the movie will be shown on the International Queer Film Festival (Lesbisch Schwule Filmtage) in October in Hamburg and the Chicago Lesbian & Gay International Film Festival in November.

Oh, and in case you know a little about German soap operas, or at least about “Verbotene Liebe”, and are thinking that some of the faces look familiar to you: Verena Zimmermann is currently playing Nico von Lahnstein on “VL”, and Vanessa Jung used to play Nico’s half-sister Jana Brandner. Yes, it’s a small world, and when it comes to actors and actresses in Cologne, it seems to be even smaller…

To get more information on the movie, the cast and the crew you should check out the movie’s official homepage and/or facebook page.

It’s still a few weeks until “Stargate Universe” returns with new episodes. Until then, why not take a look at the cool trailer for season 2.

Some of the female characters of “Stargate Universe”:
Lt. Tamara “T.J.” Johansen (Alaina Huffman, left), Camile Wray (Ming-Na) and Chloe Armstrong (Elyse Levesque)

I have a confession to make: I’m a sci fi fan.

Alright, so you probably already figured that out from reading my blog posts about the Stargate franchise or Battlestar Galactica. I’m not just watching those shows because of the amazing female characters and sexy actresses (even though I think that would be a good enough reason), but because I really love watching sci fi shows, and also sci fi movies.

Why am I telling you this? Well, I thought that it might help you understand why I picked this particular video as “Must-See of the Week”: The trailer for the upcoming second season of “Stargate Universe”.

Because the little sci fi geek in me thinks it’s very, very cool.

The new season of Stargate Universe is due to start airing on Sept. 28, 2010.

By the way, if you still need a reason (or excuse) to watch: SGU is one of the very few, if not the only sci fi show with an openly lesbian character. Camile Wray (Ming-Na) is the quasi-leader of the civilian crew on board the spaceship Destiny. In the first season, there were two episodes that featured her partner Sharon (Reiko Aylesworth), and judging from the trailer, Sharon will be back in the second season as well. Also, it looks like Louise Lombard, who played Det. Sofia Curtis on CSI for several seasons, will be back as Gloria, the wife of Dr. Nicholas Rush (Robert Carlyle).

So, what do think? Are you into Stargate as much as I am? Let me know in the comments.

Ever wanted to see and hear Callie Torres sing? And not just any song, but a very, very naughty and inapproriate one?? While Arizona was in the room??? If so, here’s your chance.

Arizona (Jessica Capshaw, left) and Callie (Sara Ramirez)

The great folks over at Grey’s Gabble just posted a clip with Callie & Arizona scenes from the shocking season 6 finale. The clip includes not only the scenes that were on TV, but ALL of their scenes, including some that were cut or deleted completely.

Spoiler Warning:

If you haven’t watched the season finale yet, let me tell you that the clip does not only include spoilers, it IS a major spoiler. So you might want to think twice before watching it. Seriously, I mean it. Don’t tell me I didn’t warn you….

Alright, I see, you HAVE to watch it, so let me give you a short introduction to the episode: A man whose wife died at Seattle Grace returns to the hospital to shoot the doctors who he thinks are responsible for his wife’s death, but when he can’t find them right away, he goes on a killing spree and starts to randomly shoot people. Both Callie and Arizona are at the hospital when it happens, and have to deal with their own critical, life and death situation that makes their relationship problems look pale in comparison.

Oh, and Callie sings. Seriously! And it is soooo sweet:

All together now: Awwwwww!

So that’s the only song Callie knows the words to? Interesting. And I love Arizona’s reaction: “Ruby, I really hope you don’t speak French.”

Right after the finale aired, their was much speculation whether this last kiss meant that they were really going to stay together, or if it was just something that happened because of the horrible situation they had just been through. Here’s what the show’s creator Shonda Rhimes had to say:

Callie and Arizona. Are together! Yay! I don’t like them apart. They are so great as a couple, so funny and sweet and emotional, that keeping them apart was not even an option right now. This baby thing, it is hard. It is an impossible situation. But in the end, they were each willing to give a little. And that means they can make it work. No matter what they end up actually deciding on the baby front. When they kiss at the end, that’s the one bright spot we have to hold on to. They love each other. Nothing else matters.

The new season starts on September 23, and there are sooooo many rumours and speculations already, including one that Callie and Arizona might take a huge step forward in their relationship. I can hardly wait!

So, what do you think, about the finale and/or Callie & Arizona? Where would you like their relationship to go?
