TLWE: Kerstin & Juliette, (not so) “Desperate Housewives”, “Mad About Maddow”, and more
Leave it to the fictional lesbians to save the week! While all the real lesbians were apparently busy watching the Winter Olympics, Kerstin and Juliette finally got it on, and one “Desperate Housewife” is suddenly not so desperate anymore…

It was a slow lesbian news week. Is it because of the Winter Olympics? Because judging from my Twitter timeline alone, it seems like lesbians all over the planet are busy watching it, and they seem to favour one discipline in particular:

So, curling, huh? I mean – really???

While all the real lesbians were busy watching and listening to women screaming “Haaaard”, there are fortunately some fictional ones who could not care less about the Olympics.
With “Starla” gone, ABC only airing a re-run of “Grey’s Anatomy”, and “Naomily” being absent from the latest episode of “Skins”, it was up to Kerstin and Juliette on “Marienhof” to keep the flag of serial lesbians on TV flying, and they made every effort.
After another bitter quarrel, Kerstin finally gave in to her romantic feelings for Juliette and let Juliette make love to her. Afterwards, Kerstin was even more confused about her feelings for Juliette because she also still loves Raul, so Juliette decided to take a few days off to give Kerstin some space. (A video of the love scene is already up on YouTube, thanks to Keriette.)

Meanwhile, over on Wisteria Lane, the “Desperate Housewives” welcomed a new resident, and she made quite an impression on one of them, as you can see in this clip:
The woman who kisses Katherine Mayfair is her new roommate Robin (Julie Benz), a former stripper and – as Katherine learns after the kiss – an out lesbian. In an interview with The Advocate, Dana Delany, the actress who plays Katherine, said that the kiss will not be a onetime incident, but that it will develop into something more, and that Robin will make Katherine question things about herself.
By the way, if you don’t usually watch “Desperate Housewives”, but just though that both actresses look familiar to you – Dana Delany had a guest appearance on “The L Word” as a U.S. senator who tried to seduce Bette Porter (she talks about this in the Advocate interview as well), and Julie Benz is probably best known for playing Darla, Angel’s girlfriend on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Angel”.
But wait, there is even another lesbian lip lock coming up on U.S. television. In next week’s episode of “Law & Order: SVU”, the dream of many lesbian fans of Mariska Hargitay and her character Olivia Benson apparently comes true – or maybe not? Olivia does in fact kiss another woman, but – unfortunately – it is not voluntarily. You can read more about the kiss and Olivia’s disappointing reaction to it on AfterEllen.
So, two lesbian kisses on U.S. television within only a couple of days? It must be sweeps! If you think that this sounds a little cynical: The February 2010 sweeps period started February 4th and ends next week. (Honi soit qui mal y pense…)

As for serial lesbians on the web: This week, we finally got to see a new episode of “Anyone But Me“, and if you have not watched it yet, you totally should, and not just because of the great performance of guest star Liza Weil (“Gilmore Girls”). She plays Aster’s therapist, and seriously, this has got to be the coolest therapist ever! And on Venice, we got to see the infamous meeting of the exes – while on a date, Ani and her new crush Lara met Gina and her date Tracy.

Speaking of fictional female characters, AfterEllen is conducting a survey among their readers who the top lesbian/bi TV, film or web series characters are. Make sure to enter your nominees until March 5th, and if you are not sure who might deserve a nomination, here are some suggestions.

Rachel Maddow seems to have won another fan. In a column for the New York Daily News titled “Mad About Maddow”, writer and musician Stanley Crouch praises Maddow for her wit and humour and describes her work as “some of the finest commentary available on cable television”. What is unfortunate, though, is that among all the nice things Crouch has to say about Maddow, he cannot help associating homosexuality with pedophilia, and what he writes about homosexuals in general and the importance of the “recognition of the humanity that Maddow and any equally talented person has to offer” sounds – though well-meant – overly patronizing. Still, he deserves some credit, and if it is only for recognizing the genius of one Ms. Maddow.
That’s it for this week. Let me know what you think in the comments, and if you share the sudden lesbian enthusiasm for curling, please enlighten me.

It’s great to see such a hit series as Desperate Housewives develop a lesbian theme. I’ve never watched the show regularly, but I tuned in this week to see the plot develop between Katherine and Robin. My novel, Seeking Sara Summers, has a very similar storyline: a woman unhappy with her marriage and searching for a more authentic life, who never considered “barking up that tree,” now considers expanding her universe!
