2. The Story So Far… (Cont’d)

When Stella tells Carla that she and Charlie are an item, Carla says that it is okay for her, but she still seems a little disappointed.

On her birthday, Stella asks Charlie to spend the afternoon with her, but Charlie tells her that she is too busy at the restaurant. It looks like Stella has to spend the afternoon alone, but then Carla offers to go out with Stella. When they arrive at Stella’s apartment, though, Charlie has organized a surprise party for Stella. Carla soon feels like a fifth wheel, especially when Charlie kisses Stella, and leaves early.

Charlie soon realizes that she cannot be with Stella the way Stella wants to be with her, especially when it comes to intimacy. She breaks up with Stella after only a few weeks.

Stella is devastated. When Carla comes to Stella’s apartment the morning after the breakup, Stella tells her that everything is alright, when in fact she cannot stop sobbing. Finally, Carla goes over to Stella and embraces her. Stella cries in Carla’s arms.

Stella seems to feel better, but only a few days later, during a wine tasting at Schneider’s, she drinks too much and verbally attacks Charlie. Carla, who accompanied Stella to Schneider’s, takes her home. There, Stella kisses Carla. Embarassed by what she did, Stella organizes a picnic in the park for Carla, Sophia and herself to apologize to Carla for the kiss.

A few weeks later, Stella supports Carla during a difficult time at Königsbrunn. When Carla breaks down and cries in Stella’s arms, Stella realizes that her feelings for Carla are deeper than she thought. Still, she does not want to act on them so soon after her breakup with Charlie, because she does not want to make Carla feel like the rebound girl.

But then Carla asks Stella to keep her company while watching over Carla’s sick horse. In this situation, they grow even closer to each other. When it is clear that the horse will survive, they are so reliefed that they get overwhelmed by their feelings for each other. They kiss (for real this time!) and make love in the hay.

Even though they are now a couple, Carla and Stella try to keep the relationship a secret at first as Carla is afraid that her brother Ansgar might go after Stella to hurt Carla. But it does not take too long before more and more people know about the relationship, especially after Maria Galdi, who pretends to be Carla’s mother Francesca, sees them kiss.

Stella soon realizes how difficult it is to be both Carla’s employee and girlfirend. When she neglects her duties because she wants to spend more time with Carla, she gets into trouble with Ansgar and decides to quit. Carla convinces her to stay, but only after they agree on a set of rules.

Another thing that puts a strain on the relationship from the very beginning is Carla’s ongoing feud with Ansgar, who deprived Carla from her position in the family business, the Lahnstein Holding. Obsessed with finding a way to get back at Ansgar, Carla forgets a date with Stella to celebrate their 1-month-anniversary and later gets into a heated argument with her when Stella tries to stop her from using Ansgar’s little son Hannes against him. Carla eventually comes to her senses, and they make up. Together, they celebrate Sophia’s second birthday.

The situation at the castle stays tense, though. When Stella is being offered a job in a hotel in Shanghai, she perceives this as a chance for a happier life for Carla, Sophia and her, far away from Königsbrunn. But when she asks Carla to go away with her, Carla is outraged and turns her down. She later realizes that Stella is right, though, and agrees to go with her.

Not knowing that it was Maria who arranged the job offer for Stella in order to get Carla to leave Düsseldorf, they start making plans for their move to Shanghai. When Stella accidentally finds out Maria’s plan, Maria convinces her not to tell Carla about it, for her own good. But Carla learns about the plan anyway and, due to a misunderstanding, thinks that Stella deceived her and joined forces with Ansgar and Maria. After another heated quarrel, Carla tells Stella that it is over.

Stella leaves the castle to return to her apartment and cry her eyes out. Carla is devastated as well. During a walk in the park, she inadvertently slips and falls into the castle moat, where she nearly drowns. Before Ansgar can save her, she has a near death experience in which she sees Sophia and Stella, and realizes what is most important to her. The next day, she apologizes to Stella and asks her for a new beginning. They decide to go on a round-the-world trip together.

While organizing her cousin Gregor’s wedding at the castle, Stella tries one of the wedding dresses on. When Carla sees her like that, she decides to propose to Stella. But then Stella makes a negative remark about weddings, and Carla starts to question her decision. Much to her surprise, it is Stella who later asks her to marry her – on the forecourt of the castle, the place where they first met.
