Congratulations Ellen and Portia!
On Thursday, in a blog entry for the Ellen-Forum, I predicted that now that the California Supreme Court has overruled the ban on gay marriage, Ellen and Portia would probably get married. Yesterday, Ellen announced on her talk show that they indeed intend to get married. Can I make predictions or what?
Okay, I agree that it wasn’t that hard to come up with this predicition, since Ellen has told Barbara Walters, Nicolette Sheridan and TV audiences all over the world that she would marry Portia “in a heartbeat” and can’t wait to get married. Still, nobody expected her to announce it right away.
I’m happy for them, and for all the other gay and lesbian couples in California who are now allowed to get married just like straight couples are. It’s another huge step in the right direction on our quest for equal rights for the GLBT community, and that someone as popular as Ellen makes an announcement like that on her talk show proves even more just how important the issue of equal rights is for gays and lesbians. The vast majority of comments on Ellen’s website have been overwhelmingly positive, making it easy to ignore the usual nitpickers who wave their bible and warn us of the doom of civilization. To those people I say: We’re here, we’re queer, deal with it!
And because there’s no way you can watch this clip too often, here’s Ellen’s big announcement:
Congratulations, Ellen & Portia!
